Danaher Motion, a specialist in motion control technology, is launching its new MA900 series of exceptionally powerful, dynamic and compact electric lifting cylinders for high-performance applications. The unique design – the nut is directly integrated into the servo motor – means that the costs of additional gearing and maintenance are avoided. What is more, they take up less space, the cylinders are easier to fit, and the dynamic response and precision of the movements increases because there is no additional backlash. Lastly, users benefit from a virtually unlimited lift, restricted only by the length of the screw, and a low lubrication requirement.
Depending on the screw lead – users can choose from ten, 20 or 40 millimeters – the MA900 series offers a peak thrust of 65,000 newtons and a peak speed of 240 centimeters per second. That makes them suitable for a wide variety of high-performance applications, including those in which pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders have conventionally been used. They are also ideal for applications with long travel paths. With a continuous torque of 55 newton-meters, the continuous thrust of the new models is between 7,775 and 31,100 newtons.
With a rotary absolute encoder to determine the position, positioning is accurate to 0.05 millimeters. Without the screw, the direct-drive cylinders measure just 28 x 23 x 57 centimeters. Special axle bearings offer protection against dust and water spray in accordance with protection standard IP65.

High-precision positioning and image processing are tasks of automated systems often found in the fields of optics, quality control, semi-conductors and microsystems.
Each manufacturer typically delivers their own separate components with software drivers for creating custom application programs. Now PI, a company which has been developing and manufacturing components in the field of micro- and nanopositioning for over 30 years, has introduced a system that unites elements of image processing and motion control in a single driver package.
As hardware, the F-311 PIMotion&Vision system uses a National Instruments PCI-bus framegrabber card, which supports 95 percent of the commercially available camera systems. In addition to basic functions for positioning and image processing, the package includes routines facilitating tasks like autofocus, edge alignment and gap determination, thus greatly shortening development and integration of custom applications. Motion systems operating in the micron or the nanometer range can easily be equipped with a camera, or even with multiple cameras of different magnifications.
